Like all apps that are offered on Apple Store and Google Play, the Bird Buddy app is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation in the EU and other similar legal provisions in the US and worldwide. When developing app features, maximum privacy for the user is always a top concern. This is why we decided to collect as little data about users as possible. To increase security, all the data transfers within the app take advantage of end-to-end encryption. This prevents third parties from accessing data while it's transferred from one end system or device to another. This way the data is encrypted on the sender's system or device, and only the intended recipient can retrieve the message.

Device permissions

The Bird Buddy app will require the following permissions on your device:

  • Location: For users with devices running on iOS, sharing your location with us within the app is voluntary and you can make it as specific as you want: for example, you can only reveal your continent (for the sake of helping out our AI).

  • Bluetooth: Necessary for pairing your device with Bird Buddy.

Content creation

Bird Buddy's camera module takes photos and videos with the frequency you determined in the settings. Sound is recorded in order to recognize birds by song and is not recorded unless you're taking a video.

If there are humans in the background they should generally be out of focus because of the default camera settings. Face-blurring technology is currently not a feature that the app supports but we are looking into implementing it via a software update in the future. You can always customize your photo with the in-app editing tool to crop out anything that you might want to leave out of the photo.

Data storage

Once Bird Buddy's camera takes the footage, it is stored in our cloud service until you transfer it to your own phone. After that is all done, it is removed from our servers (unless you decide to share some of the prettiest shots with the entire community).

Content ownership

You have full ownership of the content that your Bird Buddy creates. We cannot publish any content your Bird Buddy creates without your explicit consent (read on for instructions on how to grant it).

Access and sharing

No worries, Big Bird is not watching. We do not have access to your personal stream.

You have complete control over the stream and any recorded footage. For every picture you take, you get to decide whether you'd prefer to keep it private or if you'd like to share it with the Bird Buddy community.
