1. Get the Birdbuddy app
Download the Birdbuddy app from the App Store or Google Play.
This is where you’ll pair your camera, see postcards, and manage all settings.
2. Create an account or log in
Open the app and sign up or log in to your Birdbuddy account. An account is required to pair and manage your camera.
3. Start pairing
After creating an account, you’ll be guided straight into the pairing flow. If you ever need to start it manually, go to Cameras → "Add a Birdbuddy".
4. Insert the camera
Place the Birdbuddy Nook camera module inside the feeder. The mechanical pins need to sit securely in the feeder. The alignment lines should be straight, vertically or horizontally.
5. If the app doesn’t find your camera

Gently remove the camera and reinsert it until it clicks and the lines are straight.
- Allow Bluetooth permissions.
- Keep your phone close to the camera - ideally, they should be next to each other during this step.
- Double-check that the alignment lines are straight and the module clicks in securely.

Check for a blinking blue light after you insert the camera.
Other behavior
- No light? Charge for 30 min and try again.
- Red blinking light? Charge for 30 min and try again.
- Orange or yellow light? This may indicate a technical issue. No worries - our support team can help you sort it out. Start a chat in the bottom right corner on our website or in the app in the Help&Support section and voice the issue, then request to speak with an agent.
6. Issues with the Wi-Fi step
If the camera doesn’t connect, first move closer to your Wi-Fi router and try again.
The Birdbuddy Nook camera supports only networks with the 2.4 GHz frequency enabled.
Birdbuddy's connectivity is supported by the typical wireless standard 802.11 b/g/n and uses the Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2) protocol.
If you're having issues with the Wi-Fi password, check that the WPA2 security protocol is used.
7. Charging your camera
The Birdbuddy Nook camera should come pre-charged out of the box. However, if your camera is discharged, or you're seeing the red LED blinking three times mentioned above, we recommend charging the battery insert.
There are two ways to charge the battery of your Birdbuddy Nook:
Option 1: Charge in Place
Open the roof by pressing the side tabs. Clear any seeds from the battery area. Unscrew the cap to reveal the USB-C port. Plug in and charge for 4–5 hours.
Option 2: Remove the Battery
Open the roof by pressing the side tabs, and remove the battery insert with the front panel (you can keep the camera attached). Unscrew the cap and charge via USB-C for 4–5 hours.
Always use a reputable USB-C to USB-C cable to charge the Birdbuddy.
Do not use USB-A to USB-C, as it doesn’t support modern “smart” power negotiation (like USB-C Power Delivery), so it can’t properly control or adjust charging output for higher-power devices. USB-A to USB-C cables can lead to unstable, slow, or unreliable charging, and we recommend USB-C to USB-C instead.
